Hi. My friend and I are essentially brand new to working out. Both of us are out of shape. I am over weight and he is underweight. I dont know if this is the proper forum for such beginners but we were refered to this site by a coworker and were told it was an outstanding source of information. So my first question is, is this a site that can help someone who is very uninformed and just setting foot down this path?
First of all I want to welcome you to Elitefts! Whatever friend you have that recommended us to you, we greatly appreciate their support and kind words.
The great thing about this team and company, is that we are all greatly passionate not only about what we do, but giving back to help other people, such as yourself.
I remember years ago when I first found the site, and I was like a kid in a candy shop. I read everything I could get my hands on, submitted questions, and drove to get all the help I could.
With that said, I would look on the team to see if any of us are near you. If so, try to make a trip possible to build a connection and get some hands on help. That will give you 10x the dividends and someone to personally relate with.
As for the rest of the site, we all work or have worked with people of nearly every level. So you are certainly welcome here, and we will do everything we can to help you. I specifically work with numerous beginners and intermediate lifters, and I enjoy the process of getting new people not only into lifting, but any other strength sport (if they choose to go that route).
So my recommendations would be to do the following:
-Read the daily articles
-Submit questions into the Q&A, along with videos or any other help you may need
-If you have the free time, browse the Q&A's to see if any of the questions may pertain to you already, or if there are things you can pick up
-Use the exercise index to look up how to do many of the exercises or lifts
-Find someone to learn from
We are happy to help you however we can, just don't be afraid to reach out. We have the greatest team of lifters, coaches, business owners, doctors, parents, and people on the planet. SOMEONE on this team can always help you.
Let me know if you ever need anything, and I'll do whatever I can to help (as will any of the other team members)!
