I could use some advice/help. I wrote a book (non-fitness related) which is currently in Word document format, and I want to turn it into an ebook product I can sell online.
However I have no idea how to go about making it into a “real product” (i.e. creating a cover, getting it in the right format, getting a shopping cart and payment set up, etc.).
I know you have written several successful books and I was hoping you could lend some advice.
Thank you in advance for your help!
In general, here are some tips:
For an Ebook, you need to turn the Word format into a PDF file. If you want to sell it on Amazon via Kindle (this is HIGHLY recommended and honestly, if you are in the book business and don't use Kindle you are missing out on more sales than you can ever imagine. Think about it this way: what gets more traffic: your website or Amazon?)
However, Kindle format is different and you can either do it yourself or hire a company to do it. Amazon is very particular about the format it gets done in so going through a company is your best bet because they are responsible for making it "right".
Creating a cover can be outsourced to someone who knows how to do it, or you can simply try to create one yourself. Outsourcing is always better - you are the writer. That is YOUR talent. Let others' talents work for you.
As for shopping cart/payment, etc. - if you sell it yourself, you'll need a website and a shopping cart. WordPress sites are very affordable and look great. However, adding in shopping carts, etc may be above your pay grade. Again, something that can be outsourced.
Remember that if this is something you want to do for the rest of your life, getting a website and shopping cart is essential. It may be a few bucks more than you want to spend but in the LONG TERM it is worth it.
But PLEASE heed my advice and put your book on Amazon. Mark Rippetoe has been a great friend and mentor to me, and he has never once bullshitted me with advice on training or business. He told me years ago to get on Amazon and it can open a whole new world to you.
