thinker how old were you when you when into BUDS? i am 26 and am assuming i would be towards the older in the pack. also, assuming you wanted to be SOF what other course were you considering beside BUDS and how would your training have differed prior to arriving?
George, I was 25 when I went to BUD/S the first time. Yes, you'll be just a little older, however, that's no problem and in some ways an advantage.
When I was going to speak to recruiters the first time the Navy man wasn't in the office; however, the Marine recruiter was. He was a former Force Recon Marine and in speaking with him he definitely got me close to going with the Marines.
After I spoke to the Navy recruiter, however, he put me in touch with an active duty SEAL on the phone and that "sealed" the deal for me.
As to how my training would have differed...know that if I "knew then what I know now" I wouldn't be on the Q&A of EFS, I believe I would be operating as a SEAL as I was only failing the runs by an average of 10-30seconds and performing well in all other areas of BUD/S training. I was one week shy of 3rd phase the first time.
It was my failure to become a SEAL that initiated my process of doing what I do now. Thus, knowing what I know now, my approach to working with individuals who are entering special mission unit selection, BUD/S, SFAS, Air Force PJ school, overseas SOF selection courses,... is distinct to the specifics of each course.
If you don't own my Training for Selection manual yet, I suggest you consider purchasing it as it covers the fundamentals for any selection course. It is available at athleteconsulting.net
