As someone in your demographic (I am a 42 year old school teacher)I would strongly recommend training 5/3/1 3x a week but having an individual day for each lift. 4 workouts 3x a week allows 8-9 days between when you do the same workout. I have been doing 5/3/1 since 2008 and when I made the switch to 3x a week it was my best training decision EVER.
Thanks for the contribution. I am using pretty sub max numbers for the sq and dl so I feel pretty good about throwing the dl in with my incline bench day. The big thing for me is having the extra time to actually do extra recovery work. I do like your idea and will keep it in the back of my mind for future reference. Glad it's working for you.
