Matt,

As a football coach who's worked with tons of athletes, I figured you'd be the best guy to ask.
My training partners and myself often say that we think linebackers are the most impressive athletes as their combination of strength, performance and physique is bar none. How does their training/nutrition differ from others? What would you say a common program for a college linebacker is?
I ask because the carry over is very noticeable when ex linebackers go into other sports.
When I see a Crossfit athlete who is 215+ lbs and has great strength and performance numbers, they always end up being an ex linebacker.
Physique athletes who carry some of the best, dense, mass tend to always be ex football players Steve Cook, Craig Capurso, etc).
I have to imagine these guys obtain most of their size and strength in college programs, and can't possibly be doing your typical "muscle group" split training. Unless I'm wrong, I'd assume full-body or upper/lower.
This makes me come to the conclusion that...I want to train like an off season linebacker! Please tell me how!

Fantastic question! I don't have time right now to go into it fully. but I will say, I believe linebackers and tight ends are the greatest athletes in the world. I know the track fanatics will try to say that decathletes are the best. I strongly disagree. They compete against themselves and no dynamic outside force. They run, jump, etc.. They have to master the events, but no one is moving, trying to block them or anything like that.

Keep an eye out in my log and I'll post how to train like a football player. I'll include our basic program and conditioning at this time of year. Maybe I'll luck out and the staff will post it as an article?
