12/19/2006 8:31:11 AM - Matt M
Hey Jim,
I've never really seen an article on the site that addresses training for the drug-free, unequipped, and genetically average lifter. I understand that this is quite different from the circumstances of the best lifters, but I was wondering if you could give some insight into how you would change the program to fit the bill of this type of lifter.
I'd guess that more low end work would be necessary (without the shirt) and less overall volume (without drugs and genetics). Let me know if I'm completely off-base.
Thanks in advance Jim. Happy holidays.

Matt, I hate to do this to you, but I didn't sleep much last night and am already in a bad mood (not to be confused with the great Helmet song).
This is a bullshit question. Not a bad question, but a bullshit question, nonetheless. Issue #1 (said like John McLaughlin)
First, and the thing that pisses me off the most is when people claim "average genetics". Let me tell you something; most people have average genetics. How many people do you really know that can bench press 405 or 500lbs without ever touching a weight? How many people? or how many people squat or deadlift this?
Most of us are average - I'll tell you what the difference is and take note of this:
When I first joined the Q/A at EFS, the following powerlifters were already on staff - Bob Youngs Dave Tate Mike Ruggiera John Bott Danny Blankenship Paul Childress
I was the youngest in training age (the years I've spent lifting weights) and in age.
Now, with the exception of Scott Yard, I am still the youngest and I have OVER 18 YEARS OF TRAINING UUNDER MY BELT!
18 YEARS!
So you are telling me that we are all genetically gifted? Or is it the fact that most of the people on the site, in big meets or lifting big weights have been training for more than two decades?
Sure there are exceptions to the rule but not that many. Don't shortchange my accomplishments and others by claiming genetics. And don't blame your shortcomings because you don't have a swingin' pair. (this is not directed at you personally, just the fuck nuggets that always claim this.)
Issue #2
Drug-free.
This is so ghey. I have trained most of my life drug-free (in fact the last year was drug free) and let me tell you the big difference -
You don't get as many boners.
I trained with more volume when I was drug-free and still waiting for this magic "recovery" that all you turds talk about. Did it make me stronger? Yes.
Did it affect my training?
No.
I trained "Westside" Style or whatever the Nacho Libres of this world call it now, drug free and made massive gains. A training program has nothing to do with drugs; it has to do with modifications made in accordance to your own body. How many times do I have to say this?
Issue #3
Unequipped lifter.
Train more shoulders and chest. Train more quads.
Get really strong.
That's it my friend. I'm not here to piss you off or make an enemy. Hell, if you came out here I'd love to have you as a training partner. So don't be pissed - just understand that these questions you asked are how the Xtra Mediums of this world justify themselves being such a pussy.
Like I told a friend of mine, "Sometimes you have to stop being such a fucking pussy and put some weight on the bar."
Sound advice.

More tabs, less jabs, Jim Wendler
