Matt, why are people afraid of gaining weight? Shouldn't powerlifters just eat and train and then let their body find a weight class on its own? I understand why top level lifters cut, but for the average lifter or beginner shouldn't getting as big and strong as possible be the goal?

Agree? Disagree?

I agree for the most part. I think you should get as big as possible so you can maximize strength gains, especially when you're young. My body wants to be about 230, so for me to be 320 right now, is not "finding a weight class", it's willing myself to be in a weight class. That being said, powerlifting is about moving as much weight as possible. Mass moves mass - so, eat and grow to get strong.

Top level guys are in their own world, so don't worry about what they do. In my opinion, if you're not going to break a world record or potentially win a weight class in a national or world meet, just get big and move some weights. 10-15 years from now, you might be setting your own records and world records. It takes a long time to get strong. Decades.

Eat and be merry,
Matt Rhodes
