Boston Recap, Don't Call it a Comeback

Great time in Boston at Total Performance Sports over the weekend.

My flight there was horrible, redeye from Long Beach and I was in a row of seats that didn't recline. I got to Boston at 5:30am on Friday and was working on about 1.5 hours of sleep. From there I went to breakfast with my friend who is a track coach at Harvard and then was at the track coaching, talking shop and THROWING from about 7 until 4. Harvard has amazing facilities.

I haven't touched a shot in 18 months but was coaxed into it by the Harvard throwers and coach. I threw in my Sperry Topsiders (boat shoes for the uninitiated) and was stand throwing the 15# shot between 53-57 and took 5 full throws (3 glides and 2 spins) that were all between 59-Mid 62 and somehow I stayed in the ring for all of them which was a huge issue at the last few meets I had competed at. In fact, this impromptu session was so successful that after my December 2nd meet, I will be taking a hiatus from powerlifting to focus on the indoor track season and depending on how that goes, pushing on towards the 2012 Olympic Trials. Throwing is truly just more fun and interesting to me than powerlifting, and my window of opportunity to throw at a high level will close much faster than my window to lift heavy.

I was able to catch about a 2 hour nap, before going out to dinner on Friday with Rhodes, Vincent, my Harvard friend (Bryan), Murph and all the TPS guys. It was the beefiest table ever. With the exception of Bryan there were 8 people at the table all over 250ish, including one of Murph's trainers, Eric, who is one of the biggest humans I've ever stood next to. Needless to say the bouncers were keeping a close eye on us and keeping their fingers crossed that we behaved ourselves.

The seminar was great on Saturday and TPS is a great facility. If you are anywhere near it and serious about your training, I would find a way to get there, particularly because it is a great value. There were 49 people who showed up to hear Matt, Vincent and I talk about ourselves and lifting for a couple hours, then we broke for lunch and when we got back it was off to the bench, squat and deadlift. I coached the squat, naturally, and everyone did a great job.

The only negative to the weekend was that I didn't get ANY training done and now have to rework things a bit for the meet, but with great people around me like Josh and James, I am confident in the alterations to the plan that we will make.

My trip back was also pretty shitty. We flew into a stiff headwind and ended up having to stop in Vegas to refuel. Coming back was an 8+ hour ordeal, instead of the 5-5.5 that it would normally be.

Tank Abbot was on both of my flights and...he looks like shit.
