Return to the Shot Put

After my impromptu shot put success in Boston a few weeks ago, after not having touched a shot in 18 months, I have decided that I will be making a return to the ring in an effort to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Trials.

I think that I have gained a lot of new perspective on what is needed for me to succeed in the shot put, since I stopped throwing in May 2010. If I wasn't at the point of diminishing returns in terms of increased strength contributing to increased distance when I finished throwing (SQ-700, BP w/ bounce-500), I definitely am now (SQ-905, BP strict-515, w/ bounce-Around 550 prolly). Since I have created such a huge strength reserve, particularly in the lower body, I will be able to really focus my efforts towards developing special strength through explosive pushups, jumps (weighted, box, hurdle hops, depth jumps), throwing different weighted shots (14-17 pounds) and medicine ball throws of all varieties.

I'm very excited about getting back to sprinting and jumping and am looking forward to putting up some impressive efforts there.

I will start training again next week and plan on opening my season on February 11th.

My goals in the short term (by the opening meet on Feb 11th) are to get my weight down to 300-305 (currently 313), bounce press 500x3, stand throw the 16# shot 17.75m (about 58 feet) and open the year with a PR throw of over 19.5m (64 feet).

In the long term (by the 2012 trials) I'm looking to be at 300 pounds, bounce press 585x1, stand throw 18.38m (60 feet) and full throw 20.5m (67'4")
