Reason #3 Why Your Internet Fitness "Guru" is Full of Shit
Picking up where we left off last week, here's...
REASON #3 WHY YOUR INTERNET FITNESS "GURU" IS FULL OF SHIT
This economy sucks, and it's sucked for a while now, so I have no problem with people trying to make money any way they can. If the way you put a roof over your head and feed your kids is to sell shit on the internet and hustle people, more power to you if you're capable of surviving that way. You have to do it any way you can.
What gets to me, however, is what I'll call clusterf--k or circle-jerk marketing. This is where the same eight guys put out a product, and all give testimonials on each other's websites. You've seen this a million times, and it's usually the same group of guys.
Here's where they're brilliant. The people that use this kind of marketing have come up with a name for it that's different from mine. They call it "blowjob marketing," and I really believe they invented a term for what they do so they can come out and deny they do it. Your average internet snake oil dude will actually come out and say, "I don't engage in blowjob marketing, so this is a product I really use." But if you see one of these dudes first denying that they use this kind of marketing to sell shit, then endorsing some kind of product that has nothing to do with what THEY actually do -- and nothing to do with the type of training they say they do with their clients, it's time to be skeptical.
What kinds of testimonials hold water? Instead of looking to see what other internet celebrity salesman dudes are endorsing a product, check to see if someone totally outside the box gives a testimonial. If a guy has endorsements from some athletes, some actual team coaches, and some people who don't ordinarily endorse anything, that's maybe something you should look into. If he's got 8 testimonials from 8 internet celebrity trainers (who all have testimonials from each other), that's when it's time to get away from your keyboard and go take a shower.
