April 16, Contest (Pictures)
Greek Orthodox Easter was yesterday so I trained Saturday, spent Easter with Family, and slept the heck in today. Sitting down with meal number two and watching some tube on the wall, my God Son's father called my wife to see if we would join them in some Easter Games.
After a couple minutes of us talking we discovered that there would be a Tug Of War competition there and he wanted me on his team. I respectfully declined. He called back and my wife convinced me that if HE called us twice that it must be important to him.
Lots of complaints and loud stomping later...I was in the car and going down the road.
There was a large rock sitting by the entrance of the festival and they told me that it was a tradition that you enter and see if you can pick up the rock and possibly get it to your shoulder on the FIRST TRY. Again...I said NO till they said that no women had signed up, only 4 men hand signed up, and my wife declared that she was going to enter...
TV cameras came out and she went up and lapped it like it was a beach ball but just couldn't manage to get it up to her shoulder. The crowd was going NUTS as well and she fought it for a good while. Remember...this is your Special Education PhD Teacher here. Remember that the next time you back talk to yours... She was in dress pants, shoes, and nice shirts as well.
She dropped it to try again and get a different grip and THEN they told her that once you drop it...you are out.
Several other guys went...all but one dropping it yet going again.
Then I went up, popped it to my lap, my chest, my shoulder, and then pressed it overhead. My God Son's Girlfriend told him that his Ta-Taas (God Father) was the best...and it made his day.
After that, a few people came over to ask me to be on their team for tug of war. The area municipal team asked me to be on their team I guess.
A while later we got all set up as a team and walked all over every team out there except one...who somehow manged to get 5 extra people pulling from their end without the judges seeing it? Anyway...they were disqualified. We won every match and then accepted a challenge from the DQ'd team, and it was the easiest one yet...followed by the smallest guy at the entire festival yelling at my team mates (all kinds of up in their faces). I guess they were upset that I wasn't on their team.
A good day today, lots of fun. Met some new people and hung out with some old friends.
And I got a couple of medals!
