Learn to Train Seminar Weekend

Well my first time headed out for a Learn to Train Seminar started out rough. I had a redeye flight out of LA on Thursday night. After being selected for the private room security screening aka groping, my flight was delayed about an hour. This caused me to miss my connector from Chicago to Columbus. After running around O'Hare airport for a while, I found out the next flight I wanted to get on was full and the one after that was 4 hours later...awesome. I finally made it to Ohio, working on about 3 hours sleep, 1 of which came on the floor of the Chicago Airport. Total travel time from my front door in CA to the EliteFTS compound in Ohio was just shy of 15 hours. I missed the mornings speakers (Steve, Frey and John Meadows) and more importantly I missed lunch.

I jumped right in with Josh Bryant, Andy Deck and Stevie P. in coaching some strongman events. I'm not sure that I'm exactly qualified to coach any strongman events yet as I've been doing them for only 2 months and the majority of my technique for Strongman events, relies on just being a Strong Man. Hopefully I was still able to offer the groups some good help.

We all headed to dinner on friday night and I got talk a little training and mostly bullshit with the always entertaining Stevie P and Joey Smith. I was on a deload week this week and was getting my balls busted for not squatting. My fans were clamoring for things like 1000 pound reverse band squats and what not but luckily Josh was there to tell me not to do it.

Saturday morning I did a little training, just doing some singles with 550-600 in the deadlift while Josh helped me with technique. Since I have trained by myself for almost my whole life and never really been taught how to squat, bench or pull, it is always nice to get some high quality coaching. We moved my foot position out a little bit and the bar was moving fast. After that I worked up to 850ish on the Yoke for 50', nothing too exciting.

I spoke on Saturday about how we organize our athlete's training. With only an hour to speak, it was kinda tough to cover all the things I wanted.

Steve, Murph and I coached some squatting and deadlifting the rest of the day.

We grilled at EliteFTS that night and then Al Caslow, Mick Manley, Molly Galbraith and I stayed up late eating pizza and talking nonsense.

Sunday was kinda boring for me since I had no lifting to do while Joey, Marshall Johnson and Brandon Lilly (big ass dude) benched. Luckily I kept myself busy by helping the lovely Molly Galbraith hit a 10 pound squat PR, so I probably actually got the best deal out of everyone that day.

It was a great time in Ohio and it was nice to meet Joey, Marshall, Harry Selkow and Mick, and particularly Josh Bryant who has been helping me with my programs for over a year but we had never met in person. As well as catch up with guys I already knew like Kroc, Al, Steve and Murph. Thanks to Dave and the whole gang for putting on such a great event and thanks to everyone who invested in their knowledge and came out to learn.
