Congratulations to Landon Evans

I’m not going to begin this post by saying something melodramatic, like “In a world filled with shady characters and snake oil salesmen, there’s a man of integrity who’s always stood alone on his solitary mountaintop...”

In the case of Landon Evans, however, there’s a grain of truth to this.

Today, Landon announced to the “public” – his Facebook friends, anyway – that he’s moving back to his home state to take a job at the University of Iowa. There, he’ll be doing the same job he’s done for years at Illinois State: strength and conditioning, plus nutrition. Landon and I have become friends over the years, and this appointment makes me very happy.

In terms of what Iowa is getting out of the deal, they couldn’t possibly have hired a better guy. Landon is one of the most humble and generous people I’ve ever met in athletics. He’s also easily among the most knowledgeable. He’s a world class expert in two separate and disparate fields. He’s also never engaged in any kind of self-promotion or me-first behavior, with anyone, and his almost compulsive avoidance of any kind of spotlight has always baffled me, given the range of his expertise. Instead, Landon chooses to fly way under the radar, because his life is spent in the weight room coaching his guys. I’ve always admired him for that.

I’m happy for Landon, I’m proud to be able to call him a friend, and for what my opinion is worth, the Iowa Hawkeyes have just take a huge step forward with this hire.

Congrats, Landon.
