Offseason Day 2

Today is essentially day two of our off-season programming. Continuing the theme from Monday, today we do our “ass-from-elbow” clinic for bench. The way we’ve set this up, we’re meeting with the kids on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, at least for the next month or so (possibly less). We schedule this simply by alternating days, i.e., this week, we’re doing lower-upper-lower, so next week we’ll do upper-lower-upper.

Again, the focus of this couple of weeks, since we’re dealing with high school kids—and a lot of new ones—is to teach them the entire system so they know where to go and what to do as soon as practice starts. As I said on Monday, the most irritating thing you can run into at the start of practice is a huge cluster of kids who have no idea what they’re supposed to be doing. With high school kids, it’s literally like every day is the first day on the job, but there are steps you can take to head that off if you pay enough attention to the teaching process during the first few weeks.

I won’t get too much into programming here for now, because we’re focused primarily on our warm-up, then getting the kids to their various stations. Suffice it to say I’m going to be doing a lot of screaming today. Bench day is a pain in the ass because this is where I have to be creative in order to get all the benches I need (we work in the racks and also have to use incline benches with some kids for space reasons).

Hopefully they pick it up quickly and we can transition into getting some real work done soon.
