Deficit Deadlifts With Video

Wednesday was a raw deadlift session at EVF Performance in NYC.

Last cycle, I typically worked up to 5x5 for the raw stuff, but this time, I'm going to back off on the volume a little which will let me go a bit heavier. Plus, after 10+ years of following a conjugate periodization, 5x5 is getting a little boring.

When I get a little closer to competing, I might do something a little different, like run 5/3/1 or the Coan deadlift program. RIght now I'm just trying to get my ass back in shape.

Two weeks ago I worked up to 365, then had to take the next week off to deal with family stuff. SO this week, I went to 405. I've noticed over the last couple of weeks that my midsection is a little weak, so I did it without a belt for a change. This made it a lot harder!

Could only get the first set because my phone was dying, but check it out:

Even though it wasn't a lot of weight, my back was DONE after this. Pulling without a belt definitely exposed some weakness, so I'm gonna try to do more work without it.

I've been meaning to add some multi-plane exercises just for overall balance, so after the deadlifts, I practiced some Turkish get-ups with an embarrassingly light kettlebell. I'm going to try adding these in once or twice a week to see if I feel any better.
