Mindset Going Into Nationals

I am currently training for The 2013 North American Strongman National Championship that will be held on October 18th and 19th in Denison, Texas. I’ll be competing in the Lightweight 200# division.

Last year after Strongman Nationals I was pretty disappointed. I had gone in with the goal of 1st place and wouldn't settle for less. After day 2 of competition was over I knew it was very close between me and one guy. I actually thought I had won. But nothing was for sure until the awards banquet that evening. When they were announcing the placing's and handing out awards I heard, "And in 2nd place in the 200 pound weight class, Chase Karnes." I just sat there. I was blank. It didn't seem real. After a moment, I got up and accepted my award and soon after congratulated the one and only opponent who had defeated me.

When I got back to my hotel room that night after the banquet I sat down and wrote my programming for the whole year in a basic template form. It addressed my weaknesses, but also hit on my strengths. I was already preparing for next year.

On the back of that same program I wrote the following and I read it every week as it's been my mindset since November 3rd 2012 until October 18th/19th 2013:

"My opponent isn't as smart as me. He doesn't train as hard as me. He doesn't eat as well as I. He doesn't sleep as well as I. His recovery methods are subpar. His programming isn't as good. His genetics are lesser. He doesn't want it as bad as I. He can and will be beat. I cannot. NAS Nationals 2013. This is my year. Can't stop. Won't stop. Unstoppable."

While it may seem a little silly to some and I've got many opponents, not just one - it applies to them all.

Every time I don't feel like training I think about my opponents. Every time I think about staying up late and partying I think about my opponents. Every time I decide what I'm eating I think about my opponents. The will and desire to win and defeat them all is what keeps me going.

3 More Weeks,
Chase Karnes
