Circus DB PR, Upper Body and How I'm Currently Feeling Training Wise - 5 Weeks Out Nationals/7 Weeks Out England

I am currently training for The 2014 North American Strongman (NAS) National Championship as well as the Strongman Champions League (SCL) England u90kg. NAS Nationals will be held Oct. 4th & 5th in Reno, NV and the Strongman Champions League will be held Oct. 18th in Southampton, England. I'm also adjusting to raising a new baby boy while still working, training and living life.

Training went great today. The wifey and I had a date night last night and left little man with his grandma. We went to a local Japanese restaurant I had a huge meal consisting or a 10 oz. tenderloin steak, fried rice, French fries, a salad and a couple Sailor Jerry w/Coke Zero’s. We followed that up with some ice cream and a movie.

For the first time since I can remember I slept in past 5:45am this morning. I actually woke up a little after 8am. I had a quiet morning consisting of coffee and reading before heading off to the gym to get in a training session. I really like training on holiday’s such as today. I’m able to train without any clients in the gym and with no time schedule. I cranked up the music and just went to work. Everything felt solid and I really like where I’m at sitting at the moment (5 weeks out from Nationals/7 Weeks out from England). Post training I enjoyed a big meal of ground venison and a spinach salad. Then spent the rest of the day with the family and fishing behind the house.

I’m at my best ever at the moment. I’m stronger, faster and more conditioned than ever. I’ve looked at last year’s score sheet from Nationals so many times that I’ve got the document saved to my kindle. I know what cost me last year event wise and otherwise (torn callouses). I’ve made those weakness strengths and I’ve taken care of my hands on a weekly basis to aid in prevention of tearing callouses again. I'll be returning to the site of my first National championship back in 2010, Reno, NV. in 5 short weeks. What once was a goal to compete at the National level has progressed to finish top 5, top 3 and WIN. I've accomplished them all except one. This is the year. This is my year.

After Saturday’s event day I was feeling a bit beat up and fatigued. I like this though as it’s by design. Typically I’ll have a few crappy days around the middle of my training phase and then again around that 2 week out mark. It’s not overtraining, but just pushing on the verge of that point. Because once my deload week comes and I recover things really come together. I do use some auto regulation here with my training, but mostly what’s already been programmed on paper is from previous experience and pretty much keeps me right on track to peak for the competition.

Supercompensation is a great thing. Fatigue masks fitness. When I’m hitting PRs in a fatigued state I know what to expect come competition time. Great things.
